Weed Control Tips For Michigan Lawns

Weeds are strong, stubborn plants that never seem to go away. You pull one and it seems ten more pop up in its place. It’s a never ending struggle if you haven’t taken the proper weed control steps to prevent weeds.

Weeds aren’t just ugly, they can affect crop yields in your garden by competing with your plants for light, water, and nutrients. Weeds grow much quicker than our plants which means they can crowd out plants resulting in stunted growth. Thankfully we have found a few weed control tips for Michigan lawns to help you combat weeds this year.

Pre-Emergent Control

At the end of each year weeds disperse thousands of seeds over a wide area. If you have any weeds in your yard then you have a whole new generation of weeds just waiting for spring to come back. One of the most important steps you can take to prevent weeds in your yard is by using pre-emergent weed control in the early spring. Pre-emergent weed control covers seeds and prevents them from germinating, dealing a huge blow to the weed population in your yard.

Keep Your Grass Healthy

As we mentioned, weeds can deposit thousands of seeds in your lawn in the fall. Those seeds need two things to germinate in the spring; sunlight and warm temperatures. If your lawn is weak or unhealthy it will be thin, perfect for weeds to take over. Keeping your grass healthy means following proper watering, fertilization, and mowing techniques year-round. Followed correctly, you should see your grass get thicker and greener. Thicker lawns prevent sunlight reaching the soil where the weed seeds lie in wait. Keep your lawn healthy and you will see a noticeable difference in the weed population in your yard.

Mulch

Mulch not only makes your trees and beds stand out but it also works as an effective weed barrier. Just a few inches of mulch can block the sun weed seeds need to germinate. You can further boost your protection by first laying down a weed barrier made of fabric or plastic.

Spot Treating

Spot treating weeds is the use of herbicides on visible weeds. Even if you follow proper watering and fertilization methods weed seeds can still sneak their way into your yard from hitching a ride on the wind or through bird droppings. It is essential to target these weeds before they mature. Think of spot treating as playing a game of Whack-A-Mole with weeds. The ultimate goal being to stop the weeds before they get a chance to release their seeds.
